Benefit Street by Kathy Root Pitts Comfortable, Practical, and Natural Clothing from Terry, Mississippi Benefit Street line of apparel, begun by Paloma and Rebecca Burr, is an idea that originated in Rhode Island at the start of the 21st Century. The concept has traveled with the Burrs through seven moves and five states. Now these two ambitious ladies are working out of Terry, Mississippi, developing prototypes for several quality pieces that do just what clothing is supposed to: Cover people comfortably and sensibly. Rebecca explains the reason for starting this company with her daughter, Paloma, ?It ?s not easy to find clothes for girls and women with enough fabric to cover them and with pockets for your things or your hands if you need a place to put them. It ?s not easy to find color for boys unless the garment is emblazoned with media images. The fabric quality in store clothes is often limp and stitched together with plastic thread. Natural fabrics age gracefully, as we would like to. ? Benefit Street features durable and attractive everyday clothing in natural fabrics with comfortable waistbands and pockets. Their line of clothing started as skirts with wide waistbands, gathered or not, made of cotton or linen, designed in prints or solids. These items are priced ranging around $25, depending on the cost of the fabric. The Burrs also create boy ?s items as well. Notice the boy ?s apron in the accompanying photo, below. When asked how they are faring with this mother and daughter sewing venture, Rebecca playfully states that they are progressing with Benefit Street ?by the seat of our pants, and we ?ll be making those, too.
