A STAFF OF TWO CELEBRATES FOUR YEARS HIGHLIGHTING THE BEST OF MISSISSIPPI
With the 2005 Summer issue, The New Southern View magazine celebrates four years of publication.

Jackson, MS — June 21, 2005 — Think of a magazine and you envision a large organization with many employees, the typical make-up of a magazine’s staff. However, there is a publication out of Jackson, Mississippi, with a staff made up of only two very talented individuals, both native Mississippians.

This community-oriented print magazine is The New Southern View, and from its start in the Summer of 2001, it has explored the state of Mississippi in an entertaining and educational manner. The magazine is run by Dr. Kathy Root Pitts and her husband, William Pitts, who states, “We approach our articles from the perspective of someone unfamiliar with Mississippi and we try to elicit an ‘I didn’t know that!’ response from our readers. Although we both have been around for about fifty years, there is a lot we still don’t know about Mississippi—a lot that we’re just now beginning to learn. And we’re finding out that our state is a pretty amazing place.”

Handling the bulk of the writing and photography themselves, they include the occasional contribution from a growing network of local writers and photographers.
The magazine design is all theirs, though, as they wish to maintain complete control over the appearance and content of their unique publication.

Whether telling the story of Jackson’s hidden volcano, relating the history of the old Mississippi River basin model south of Clinton, or finding out what happened to the telescope lens that Ole Miss lost as a result of the Civil War, the writing team of Pitts and Pitts keeps their articles fresh and interesting, often throwing in surprises for their readers.

Their magazine, with a quarterly circulation of 10,000 copies, is free—a list of distribution points can be found on their website—and each current issue is posted in its entirety on-line at www.newsouthernview.com. With its enticing design and refreshing approach, everyone can find something of interest in the pages of The New Southern View.
